seeing as how i've never painted a mermaid before, i thought now was a good time to paint one. she is a sweet little gothic mermaid sitting on her rock with a black flower in her purple hair.

Amethyst

i always intended Amethyst to be a faery, but somehow she seemed finished without her wings. she is based on the crystal of the same name. when i decided to paint this i was trying to capture what i felt was the essence of the crystal, the personality of an amethyst. sort of shy but in control, deep thinking and spiritual.

 Starstone

i worked on this painting after "amethyst". again, this is a represntation of a crystal (starstone or blue goldstone). the crystal is dark blue and has sparkles like the night sky, and that is what Starstone is like, she is the night and is twirling the stars around her. she helps to keep the universe spinning and she is so full of energy she s always on the move. she is always different every time you look at her, just like the starstone crystal will change as the light hits it from different angles that is why i painted her full of movement.

Andraste

Andraste is a celtic goddess legend has it that she was invoked by Boudicca before she attacked the occupying romans. she is therefore often conected with war. so i have painted her strong, she is her own person and is happy with who she is. she s powerful and has confidence in her own power. she is very protective also, even though she looks tough there is something in her face that reminds us that there are other sides to her nature.

      Psyche in the underworld

i painted this because i always loved the greek/roman myth about cupid and psyche. this is from the part where psyche has been sent into the underworld by Aphrodite to fetch a box of containing the secret of eternal beauty from Persephone. she is told not to open it, but curiosity gets the better of her and she opens the box and sleep comes out, she only wakes when cupid somes to her rescue. this is the her just as she opens the box ... the exit from the underworld is just above her.

The Dream: Psyche asleep in the underworld

funnily enough i painted this first, but it is the moment after the painting above. psyche is asleep in the underworld, the faeries that bring her dreams dance around her head. this is a mixed media piece, above psyche a typewritten account of the legend is worked into the piece.
